About South Carolina VOAD

The South Carolina VOAD is the forum where organizations share knowledge and resources throughout the emergency management  cycle- preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation- to help disaster survivors and communities across the state affected by disaster.

Members of the South Carolina VOAD are an association of nonprofit and voluntary organizations that repond to disaster as part of their overall mission. Government agencies- local, state, and federal- are also partners in the VOAD network.

South Carolina Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SCVOAD) provides a mechanism for agencies to work together to prepare for the needs of those effected by disaster events in South Carolina. SCVOAD is the South Carolina representation of National VOAD. SCVOAD is a multi agency coalition designed to coordinate service delivery planning and reduce duplication of services. SCVOAD provides agencies a framework of Communication, Cooperation, Coordination and Collaboration to meet the needs of those affected by disasters. Quarterly meetings are conducted across the state to share information and resources in preparedness for disasters. SCVOAD is a humanitarian association of independent voluntary organizations who may be active in all phases of disaster.  Its mission is to foster efficient, streamlined service delivery to people affected by disaster, while eliminating unnecessary duplication of effort, through cooperation in the four phases of disaster: preparation, response, recovery, and mitigation. SCVOAD is not a competing or exclusionary organization. It is intended to be a network for organizations active in disaster.  Each member organization will maintain its own identity and independence while closely collaborating with other member organizations, interfaiths, and local, state, or federal authorities.

SCVOAD accomplishes its mission by adhering to the following principles.  These principles serve as the foundation for the South Carolina VOAD as it collaborates with local, regional and national partners to coordinate disaster relief, response and recovery efforts in times of disaster:

Cooperation:  Foster cooperation among SCVOAD member organizations at all levels and in all phases of disaster.

Communication:  Exchange and disseminate information among member organizations and, where appropriate, the public, as well as local, state and federal agencies, in conjunction with the individual SCVOAD members.

Coordination:  Coordinate the development of SCVOAD policies and procedures, and, the implementation of services among member organizations. SCVOAD may also provide links to national and international disaster relief organizations.

Collaboration:  We dedicate ourselves to work together to achieve specific goals and to form partnerships before the disaster response so that collaboration is more effective during the disaster response.
